ENGINEERING DESIGN

  concept to creation

Engineering design and development is where vision becomes reality. Whether it's wind farms, solar installations, or hybrid power plants, Veld oversees the complete design and development lifecycle – from initial concept through to operational readiness. We handle everything: site evaluation, permitting, environmental planning, electrical design, plant optimisation, and compliance. Our approach is rigorous, strategic, and focused on one goal: delivering robust power plants that perform.

Site Selection

Get the site right, and everything else follows. Site evaluation and selection is the foundation of every successful project. We assess multiple factors: grid proximity, environmental and social conditions, and crucially, resource quality. We begin with satellite data and mesoscale modelling to profile the energy resource. As development progresses, we deploy ground-based measurements to validate production estimates with real-world confidence.

Project Development

Once we've identified a winning site, the development phase kicks in. We navigate the full permitting landscape:

  • Environmental Impact Assessment
  • Grid Connection
  • Re-zoning Approval
  • Mineral Rights Section 53 Approval
  • Civil Aviation Approvals
  • Water Use License

Environmental Planning: Early-stage site examination demands rigorous environmental assessment – both at the landscape level and for specific on-site impacts. Once a site clears environmental hurdles, we shift focus to detailed site planning and mitigation strategies.

Electrical Design: Every Veld plant is engineered to comply with South Africa's Grid Code requirements, ensuring seamless integration with the national network.

Plant Optimisation: We continuously refine our designs to maximise energy yields within project constraints, squeezing every kilowatt-hour from the site.

EMI Compliance: Our power systems meet all applicable electromagnetic emission standards, ensuring interference-free operation.

The REIPPPP

Since 2011, Veld has been developing projects for the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REI4P) – a programme that has earned international recognition for its robustness, transparency, and effectiveness.

The ambition is clear: 17.8 GW of renewable energy capacity installed across South Africa by 2030. The mandate is equally clear: reduce greenhouse gas emissions, diminish reliance on coal and nuclear power, and nurture local manufacturing in the renewable energy sector. It's a programme that works, and we're proud to be part of it.

Private Power

South Africa's private power market is experiencing rapid growth, driven by energy security concerns and the competitive economics of renewable energy. Businesses and municipalities are increasingly turning to independent power producers to secure reliable, affordable electricity – bypassing grid constraints and reducing exposure to load shedding. This shift represents a fundamental change in how the country sources its power. Veld is at the forefront of this transition, having conceptualised the largest private power wind project in South Africa: the 400 MW Overberg Wind Farm. This landmark project exemplifies the scale and sophistication of opportunities now emerging in South Africa's private power landscape – and our commitment to delivering transformative solutions that meet the country's urgent energy needs
